About Ecoloxica

Ecoloxica. EcoLogica.

In Spanish, the letter "x" is pronounced the same way that the "h" is pronounced in English.  "Ecológica" simply means ecologic in Spanish.

But there's more behind my choice to use the letter X in my blog name. My parents are from Mexico. My name is Alexandra. The letter X is a big part of who I am. Before the Spaniards came to Mexico, there existed the Mexicas, indigenous people who ruled the Aztec empire. Here the "x" is pronounced as a "ch" - so in this way, as an Ecoloxica, I am also an Ecolo-Chica. An ecological gal.

Eco-Vaquera

Ecoloxica (also known as Undercover Mexican Girl), is lover of all things sustainable, organic, natural, and authentic.

Ecoloxica has been recycling for quite some time. She can remember being a teenager at home and getting scolded by her mother for not recycling. Her mother would say, “This is for the good of your generation…and future generations!” When she moved to Austin in her early 20s, it was quite easy to recycle, with the city-wide curbside recycling program, and recycling bins in most public and office places.

In her early 30s, she discovered the importance of eating organically, so she started shopping at stores like Whole Foods and Central Market. This led her to ultimately visit the farmers market, where she learned it was not only important to shop organically, but also locally, and to avoid packaging as much as possible. In addition to using those large reusable canvas shopping bags, she started using little lightweight bags for produce and bulk items. Being environmentally friendly and eating in a sustainable manner also helps Ecoloxica be healthier in body and mind, and have more energy to do all the things she wants to do in life (it’s a never-ending list).

The journey to leaving a smaller carbon foot print is endless and full of new findings and resolutions. Ecoloxica also composts, reuses and fixes things whenever possible to keep them out of the dump, and tries to minimize her use of energy by not leaving the water running too long, or not leaving lights and appliances running needlessly. If Austin drivers weren’t so mean, she’d ride her bicycle more often.

She dreams of one day building her home from scratch in the Big Bend desert of West Texas and living off the land. On days when it’s challenging to lead this kind of lifestyle, she simple reminds herself – what would her abuelos have done during their youth in Mexico? (They all happened to have grown up on ranches and farms.)
